One thing that does bother me about these ridiculous stories attacking Kavanaugh (he partied in college, that he had debt that he paid off) is that's a part of a wider, "print anything" trend that could deter good people from public service. 1/
No one is going to say no to the Supreme Court, that's not what I mean. Think everything from Schedule C to SES. Anything where even the appearance of impropriety gets a front-page splash.

One of the weaknesses of 24hr news is that it reports normal things as scandals 2/
And for people who have strong careers as lawyers, businessmen, military leaders, it's very easy to say "naw, I don't want to deal with the headache and the doxing and the personal attacks." 3/
In Bob Gates' book, he talked about having to spend $50k on accountants/lawyers just to comply with disclosure requirements. You get one thing wrong on those forms, even a small innocent mistake, and it's all over cable news. /4
Another friend told me he had to sell off long-held Coca-Cola stock just to take a senior DoD job. "What the hell for?" I asked. "The military buys a lot of coke," he said. He was in a position that had precisely nothing to do with purchasing soft drinks. 5/
So many people say screw it.

The irony is, Govt is more transparent now than it has ever been. And yet faith in institutions like Congress, govt is at an all time low. Part of that is, of course, politics being an ugly process and a few rotten apples spoiling the barrel 6/
But part of it is this "attack first, ask questions later" mentality that's social media and 24hr news driven, and good people do get unfairly hit with friendly fire.

And hooo boy is that ugly when it happens. Anyway, I just hope editors learn to say "yeah that isn't news" again
