I've just gotten off the phone with an Aussie friend of mine. It's 1AM in Adelaide and she stayed up to a reasonable CST hour to ask me what was actually going on in the US.

I've just realized I don't mince words or play polite with my foreign friends like I do my domestic ones.
All of us having these conversations at home are still typically careful not to invoke the worst specters, because we have all realized we are so close to them becoming reality that to speak them might be taken as a sign of endorsement.
But to my Australian friend, I have just said that we've fully seated a fascist authoritarian rule, that somewhere behind us was the Rubicon, and that we failed to organize in time to stop it. Any organization now is to mitigate the damage.
I told her to start paying close attention in about October for rhetoric that would discredit the results of the elections, because the broad left has just discovered security concerns and the broad right will be pushing voter fraud. In either case, trust in outcomes is iffy.
(Dear foreign friends, FYI the Electoral College doesn't come into it this time because we're not electing a President. This election is all of the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate, plus our state and local elections as applicable)
We discussed the need for Australians (who are after all trying to become us as quickly as can be managed under the Liberal government) to organize themselves locally, how US organizers had dropped that ball out of pride and hubris, usually
I tried to explain how it is that the broad left in the States has been watching fascism rise and has chosen to spend its time infighting about who could hypothetically have stopped it had history not unfolded as it did instead of actually stopping it.
Most of all, I told her it was game over. There's no coming back from this, no way to undo these harms. We may or may not become a functioning nation in time to stave off the collapse of the government, but it's not looking good.
She asked if there was no way we could stop this, and I told here that there were plenty, but that it seemed unlikely we would up and do any of it.

We are watching them come for brown and black people, for gay people, for the disabled and the homeless.
And while we register our discontent to our friends and even sometimes strangers, we are still for the most part just watching and murmuring behind our hands.

So now it's just a question of watching how they come and who they come for next.
(There's always the option of doing something instead, but we won't do that in large number if it inconveniences us too hard or puts us in too much risk. If we were inclined to, we already would have. There's enough bloody lines in the sand behind us just in the last year.)
