Mueller probe indicts 12 Russians with hacking Democrats in 2016

The 12 were members of the GRU and are accused of engaging in a sustained effort to hack the computer networks of Democratic organizations and the Hillary Clinton campaign.

"on or about April 15, 2016, the Conspirators searched one hacked DCCC computer for terms that included “hillary,” “cruz,” and “trump.” The Conspirators also copied select DCCC folders, including “Benghazi Investigations.”

GRU hackers also stole files from cloud-hosted DNC servers by using the service's backup system and transferring the backups to another account they set up with the same service.

Lukashev set up the computers used to phish Podesta and other Clinton campaign officials.

Potemkin set up DCLeaks to distribute the stolen data.

The U.S. government confirmed Guccifer 2.0's access to the DNC by matching specific search terms sent by the GRU hackers with terms used by the Guccifer 2 persona.

On or about July 14, 2016, the GRU hackers using the Guccifer 2.0 persona, sent Wikileaks an email with instructions on how to access the stolen DNC data. On or about July 18, 2016, Wikileaks confirmed it had the data and would make a release of the stolen documents “this week.”
