This is why it's so hard to separate signal from noise with defense reporting. The Brits literally announced this jet yesterday and already there's an exhaustive piece on how the jet will face "challenges."

No one even knew it existed until 24 hours ago! thedrive.com/the-war-zone/2…
and the Brits were not exactly announcing lightyear advances in technology here.

It's not like they said at FAIT, "this bloke will have photon torpedoes, warp the spacetime continuum, and merge with other jets to form Voltron." It's just a 5th gen follow-on to the Typhoon
this reminds me of missile defense. The reporting on that was:

1980s - missile defense is impossible
1990s - missile defense is improbable
2000s - missile defense is uncertain
2010s - missile defense 70% kill ratio isn't good enough, it's a failure
See also F-35 and F-22, which really did have some development troubles. It was, and is, impossible to tell which are normal headaches that are customary with new, advanced technology, and which are major problems that could jeopardize the program.

It all runs together.
So you heard it here first. We're in for 20 years of "the plagued and troubled Tempest program," where if BAE cuts the lawn differently they'll be a screaming headline hitting the program in The Guardian written by a reporter who hasn't even been born yet
