Those of us who work in ag know, "men are the primary farm operators for most farms" is bullshit.

Ain't so.

Men are the primary tractor drivers.

Driving the tractor =/= running the business.

Most family farms I've worked with, the woman runs the accounting. Running orders. Invoicing. Payroll. If the farm has a packinghouse (a HUGE revenue driver), odds are she's in charge of it.
For dairies, raising the next generation of young stock (aka the future of the farm) is usually her job. Plus the business side. And whatever milking & mucking needs doing.
In cases where men are indeed primary operators on family farms, a shocking proportion get that role bc their wife's got a full time job.

She's not there to work the farm bc she's too busy getting the family's health insurance & actually putting bread on the table.
This is how the "family farming crisis" works in real life. It's a lot of women busting their asses so their husbands can have an expensive hobby called farming.
And for those operations where she's involved, it's generally at a much higher level than anyone's willing to publicly admit.
This is a huge problem for the agriculture sector.

It's toxic for *any* industry to have this much of a split between who actually does the work & knows the business's affairs, vs who gets to speak for it & make decisions.
There's a big correlation IME between "farms where women have real authority" & "those that are financially successful."

If we're serious about saving farms, we should be talking about *that.* Very, very seriously.
And we definitely shouldn't have real live professional conferences keeping the "women don't farm" ball rolling.

How well can they serve the industry if that's how they think it works.
