I was going to Napa for a week, so I emailed Jonathan Gold and asked him where to eat. “Go to Terra,” he said. “Order the spaghetti with tripe. It’s not on the menu.” So we went to Terra and ordered the tripe.
Five minutes later, the chef came out of the kitchen and asked how we knew about the tripe. I told him. “Oh, you know JONATHAN? Jonathan is the best.” And he sent out some extra courses.
Terra, btw, was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Before we left the restaurant, we booked again for two nights later. I thanked Jonathan, who was delighted; he loved sharing what he knew about food.
He also was very carefree about restaurant sanitation grades. I assume he wrote about this somewhere, but if you mentioned that some restaurant had a B grade, he said, “The B stands for bonus.”
Whenever I see a B grade in a restaurant window, I think of Jonathan. RIP - rest in pork.
Also, before he wrote about food, he wrote about music, and he especially (and *unironically) loved L.A. hard rock and hair metal. He told me that when he worked at the Herald-Examiner, he answered his phone by saying, “Hello, Guns N’ Roses desk.”
Found the email. Jonathan reallllly loved Terra. Maybe as much as he loved Jitlada.
Oh, also: Went to San Francisco years ago and asked him where to eat. He sent me to a dumpy spot with awful parking in the Outer Sunset, which served the best cumin lamb I’ve ever had.

Tweeting about Jonathan has made me hungry. I think he’d like that.
