1. Been thinking about the nature of competition that results in products that sell (and stuff that doesn’t, which gets junked/goes into landfill), and how that’s at odds with our desire to reduce planet warming emissions: Can companies collaborate to reduce environmental impact?
2. For eg, all car companies carry out research & development into safety and emissions - this kind of work involves lots of testing, which results in more pollution - can more companies pool efforts to reduce environmental impact while benefiting jointly from collaboration?
3. Yes, this potentially reduces a company’s competitive advantage which translates into lower profits and stock price, but are profits worth the damage to the environment? Can embracing “collaborative-competition” produce differentiated products that improve the human condition?
4. Microsoft and Tesla have embraced open source; research efforts in medicine and pharmaceuticals help inventors and entrepreneurs pursue new ideas without duplicating expensive (and damaging from an environmental standpoint) work - we need more of this tesla.com/blog/all-our-p…
