When I had an assignment in LA, I'd ask Jonathan Gold to suggest a new place I should try. He'd give me a name or two, and add, "Or you could just go back to Jitlada"--the Thai restaurant on Sunset he revered.

I had a few hours free one afternoon, so I drove across town before Jitlada closed for lunch. I ordered too much food and looked at my phone while I waited for it. And I couldn't help but notice that the two women sitting next to me kept talking about a "Jonathan."
OK, maybe I eavesdropped just a bit. They were talking about what was happening at the LA Weekly, and at Conde Nast, and I realized I was sitting right next to Jonathan's friend Ruth Reichl and his wife Laurie Ochoa.

(If you were smart, you ate where Jonathan ate.) My food came, I ate & tried to leave my neighbors alone, but when they noticed I was sweating, they pointed out that I hadn't even ordered any of Jitlada's spiciest dishes, and was therefore a pitiful lightweight. They were right.
Last thing, related to Ruth Reichl's lede: Giving Jonathan a deadline was useless. You could shame, beg, it didn't matter. At Blender once, he said, "I'm literally faxing the piece now, then I have a flight to Italy." The fax didn't come until weeks later, after he'd returned.
