Hi #ethicalCS peeps, before we get started I wanted to point a couple of resources that are worth looking at. First, #ethicalCS has a website ethicaCS.org. Take a look. It needs to grow so reach out if you want to help.
Next up is the #CSforAllNYC CS Blueprint which contains helpful definitions and values. #ethicalCS is a collaboration with members of the NYC DOE CSforAll team.
Whoops, here is the link to the Blueprint #ethicalCS - blueprint.cs4all.nyc
Finally, here is @TheOfficialACM new code of ethics, which are worth a close look. We will be referencing it on occasion tonight. It is helpful in thinking programmatically about #ethicalCS - acm.org/code-of-ethics
Also want to point out that I’m doing the #ethicalCS chat from Cape Cod, MA, where I’m with my new born twin girls and partner. This is us on the beach from a couple of days ago. Where are you tweeting from?
Q1: Intro yourself & describe your relationship to tech, computing, and CS education. #ethicalCS
A1: Saber here. Middle and high school CS teacher in NYC. Organizer of #ethicalCS. Also a @ProcessingOrg Foundation Fellow for K12 CS outreach. Also organize creative coding events ccfest.rocks
Q2 How should we engage others, especially students, educators, professionals, in ethical thinking about Computer Science and technology? #ethicalCS
A2: Everyone having a sense of right and wrong. Most are interested in how tech is impacting society. Students and pros should have a stronger inclination to dig into this in an interdisciplinary way. Ethical thinking based on values can built from this #ethicalCS
Q3 How should a code of ethics, like the ACM’s, help us think through and navigate complex questions and situations in the classroom and at work? #ethicalCS
A3: The codes can be a list of values and how they might be engaged with. But they require active participation. As others have stated, they are not algorithms, recipes, procedures that will prevent evil while we pursue employers project #ethicalCS
Q6 Looking at @ACM_Ethics 2.7 - How can ethics help us build diverse and inclusive computing communities? How do we hear and empower groups that continue to be underrepresented in computing? #ethicalCS
Last Q of the night coming. Hope you all had fun and engaged with some important ideas. Follow our guests and their work, esp the new @TheOfficialACM ethics code #ACMCodeOfEthics. We will be back next month, August 29, Wednesday, for the next #ethicalCS
Q7: How should we use a code of ethics to help us think abt value, sustainability, & regulation of technology cos that seek to “disrupt” sectors in search of efficiency & profits? How do we engage in societal & systemic thinking with other groups to seek a social good? #ethicalCS
Thank you to our guests - @ACM_Ethics, @jakebask, @dongotterbarn, @kirkpams, @luke_stark, @stoyanoj, @martyjwolf, & co-host @Robinsony811. Please use the #ethicalCS hashtag as you see fit. Join us on the last Wednesday of each month for another chat.
