A lot of people will spend time today talking about all the ways to help LE investigations w/o undermining encryption.

But there's some vital subtext here that I'm going to go ahead and make text.
If LE (mostly FBI) stopped making a fuss about encryption, there would actually be time, energy, and resources to discuss these other pieces of the puzzle.
I haven't spoken about encryption once in the last many years where I haven't asked, nay begged, to put this conversation to rest so we could move on to more pressing matters that could actually make an impact without corroding human rights AND digital security
If LE was serious about getting help with investigations they have all the ability to cede the crypto wars and let us all move on with our lives.

But they won't...
Because they think they can have it both ways. And they're probably right. They'll get all the tools they want, just like they got their stupid "procedural" rule change that allows them to get authorizations to hack shit before we had a substantive conversation about gov hacking.
And they'll do that quietly while on the front end they keep the rest of us occupied fighting the fight with the most dire consequences - making sure encryption stays undisturbed.
And when they have all the other things they are looking for and they've worn down the people defending encryption, they'll get that too.
We need to start critically and holistically considering what law enforcement is doing to digital security in the name of investigations - including what the problems actually are.
In the meantime, I, for one, am not ready to move a dime toward giving LE more authority or ability to conduct investigations until they make a statement in support of the development and use of encryption. Full stop.
