You know what is sad about #TrumpTapes? He paid the big bucks right before the election to bury these stories because he didn't want to sink his chances with the Christian evangelicals.

Time has shown us that he actually thought too highly of them.
Trump paid money to make his affairs go away because he was counting on "values voters" he thought would be repulsed by the contents of the stories.

But now they're out, confirmed, and the answer is a resounding shrug.

I guess the "value" in "value voter" is as in "bargain".
Trump knew the leaders of the Christian political right were phonies, of course. He knew this because he watched them lie for him, cover for him, tell their flock he was saved, that they had heard his private confession and conversion.
But I guess he must have thought the flocks these wolves in sheep's clothing led to the slaughter must have had some sincerity behind their protestations of morals, or he never would have plunked down six figures to keep his antics quiet from them.

Cheating on a pregnant wife.
Cheating on a woman who had just given birth to his son.
Donald Trump is a man who thinks the worst of everyone he meets. He doesn't understand truth or conviction or honesty or humility or charity.

But he thought better of America's conservative Christians than they think of themselves.

He expected more from them.

What a rebuke.
What could anyone say about the amoral hypocrisy, the moral cowardice, of the Christian right that would be a bigger rebuke than that?
Donald Trump stood in front of a camera, in front of a crowd, and said that he hasn't confessed his sins because he doesn't believe he's ever done anything wrong. I cannot imagine a more anti-Christ president.

And for that, the "Moral Majority" traded their values.
I'm not gleeful. I'm not angry. This has been a profoundly sad realization. I didn't think that highly of the so-called "Moral Majority" to begin with, didn't think much of their claim to Christian virtue.
But realizing they failed to live up to even Donald Trump's expectations of their moral sincerity just... I lost a bit of respect I didn't realize I had left.
