My experience as an agency signed androgynous identifying/nonbinary model: a thread 💛
There has been countless amounts of times I am booked because of my androgyny and then be put into a suit of some sort. (Though there is nothing wrong with this, this feeds into the expectation of androgyny; masculine only.)
When I express myself masculine, it gives my identity “worth”. I feel my gender identity is overall respected this way, and is even highly encouraged. I am booked often for my andro look, and though I do fully enjoy myself this way, it left me feeling discouraged.
Femininity is very often looked down upon for nb/androgynous people, as if it “lowers” their validity in their identity. This is completely wrong, there’s a reason why GYNE is in the word androgynous (androgyne)! There is nothing to feel ashamed of over expressing femininity!
There are times often where I feel the most androgynous in something considered feminine, to blend completely ambiguously in something that goes against the norm of androgyny. I want to show people that there is no right or wrong way to express yourself! Do what YOU want!
I always make sure I represent all sides of me, as I am LIMITLESS! It is important for me to spread nonbinary representation in the modeling industry! To put a nb face in the many magazines I’ve been published in (and will be published in) and to walk runway as a queer person!
My identity is not up for debate. I know who I am and how I identify, and I will express that as I please! Being nb/androgynous identifying in a very binary industry, I need to make sure my voice and identity is expressed. This is who I am and I am perfectly me! 💛
