This thread has been getting a lot of attention lately, so I want to make an important clarification on one of its central themes.
1. Many people have been replying to me with thinks along the lines of "Yeah, these people are stupid or racist or whatevs. So what?"
2. The hidden assumption here is that how we know shapes how we use power. So f--- 'em if they can't see reason!

But this is precisely the opposite of what Niebuhr's saying: *how we use power shapes how, and what, we know.*
3. If that's not a disconcerting thought for you, it ought to be. It should also remind you that to change how someone sees the world is a non-trivial act of power.
4. So the point of the earlier thread isn't to mock, judge, sympathize with or even try to understand these people. It's to point out that their worldview is an assertion of their power, and to change it will require an assertion of power.
5. Why do you think they fight the ghosts of the Civil Rights Movement so hard? The memories of lynching? Obama's supposed otherness? Because their white privilege is power, and they can feel it slipping away. They'll fight to maintain that power, hard.
6. Forget the battle for the House, even for the Senate. America's in a fight for hegemony over its collective psyche, and that ain't no small thing.
7. End of mini thread. (I originally typed "many threat," which also works, I guess.)
