I like the idea of the village model, where every kid has a shot at the best skill set drawn from among numerous like-minded adults living in an intentional and law-abiding community together....
But yes, for generations kids were taught by the adults closest to them, mother, father, aunt, uncle, gramma, grampa, parents of friends and parents' friends.
Public school is the "johnny come lately" to the party and only since its advent have we witnessed literacy declining (after, yes, a few generations of being on the upswing) and more to the point: practical skills -- survival, homemaking, homesteading -- dying out.
