Matt Wrack is a useful way to illustrate the modern Labour Party (thread)
He's been a member for two years, having previously been prominent and active in the Socialist Party
You might know him better as General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union
His current role in the party is as Secretary of the Labour Representation Committee (LRC), which John McDonnell's run for many years.
The LRC and the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy (CLPD) share pretty much all their members, and are tiny by comparison to Momentum.
The Secretary of CLPD is one Peter Willsman, the now disputed member of the JC9 group of candidates for Labour's NEC
It's no surprise to see Wrack, and by extension the LRC, backing Willsman.
Momentum's purpose is to support Jeremy Corbyn both as an individual but also as a concept, i.e. as a left wing leader of the Labour Party capable of uniting the factions, something nobody has been able to do before because far left politics always descends into sectarianism.
So, in a classic example of this, while John McDonnell is trying to position himself as Zero Tolerance Man, his lieutenant, Wrack, is saying the exact opposite to score factional points, get people to leave Momentum and join LRC/CLPD
This sort of thing didn't used to matter. Of course it happened all the time in the dark fringes of far left politics, but it was out of sight of the media and most party members. The people involved didn't matter, the things they did didn't matter.
Sadly, it matters now.
