The thing about neo-Nazi rallies is: of course they're dangerous. People who oppose fascism are always putting themselves in mortal danger by counter-protesting, because fascists will gladly murder people who get in their way.

But if you don't oppose them, the fascists win.
I'm going to put it to you straight: there are going to be neo-Nazi rallies in the United States tomorrow. I would very much like this not to be true, but I suspect that at least one person who goes out to oppose them will not come home again. The neo-Nazis will kill someone.
They'll kill someone, and just like with Heather Hayer, they'll laugh over their death. They'll take cruel delight in it. Many others rallying in opposition to fascism will also be hurt, abused and possibly arrested.

That's really scary. Don't think I don't understand that.
I understand anyone who wants to stay home and not put their lives, jobs, freedoms, friends and families at risk. I don't pass any judgement or hold any ill-will towards them. Opposing fascists terrifies me.

But if EVERYONE becomes too afraid to oppose them, then they win.
But everyone who DOES show up to oppose them? They're not risking their lives in vain. Every person who stands up to fascists - risking their reputation, risking their job, risking their freedom, risking their life - inspires other people to do the same.
Heather Heyer did not die a meaningless death. Ultimately, she gave her life - unwillingly, of course - to prove that fascists don't care about dignity, democracy, free speech or the sanctity of human life. It wasn't just some meaningless, phyrric "moral victory."
Unite the Right was supposed to make the right look invincible and morally justified. Instead, they ended up looking like a bunch of brutal thugs. They became such a political liability that their strongman Trump was forced - however unwillingly and insincerely - to condemn them.
Every time even one fascist draws a gun at an unarmed teenager, they all lose.
Every time even one fascist unleashes a barrage of ethnic slurs on camera, they all lose.
Every time even one fascist punches someone without justification, they all lose.
Every time even one fascist looks like what people think a fascist looks like, they all lose.

And every time people show up to oppose them, fascists will start doing those things, because they have to. Fascists CANNOT ignore opposition; their ideology cannot survive if they do.
Anyone who opposes fascists not only shows fascists they aren't unopposed, but also shows OTHER NON-FASCISTS the same thing. Every time people are willing to take risks to oppose fascism, it sends a message to other people who want to do the same thing that they aren't alone.
Fascists want you to think their numbers are endless, but at Charlottesville, the fascists were outnumbered at least 2-to-1 by counterprotestors.

Less people came to Trump's inauguration than attended DC protests against the separation of families by ICE.

THEY are the minority.
All the tactics neo-Nazis and other fascists use - doxxing, mockery, harassment, violence, both threatened and actual - are force multipliers. They cannot win through sheer weight of numbers, so they have to use fear to reduce the number of people willing to oppose them.
Every time a trans woman is harrassed off Twitter or a vulnerable gay teen is outed to his bigoted family or a black man is beaten until his spine cracks, other people look at them and worry that it will happen to them next. Fascists are counting on that.
But every time they do that and people continue to oppose them anyway, it not only weakens their resolve, but restores the courage of people their tactics were frightening.

Fascists can kill and silence individuals, but they can't kill and silence all of us. We're too many.
And for god's sake, people, recriminations can wait for another day.

If you're conservative, or libertarian, or think Reagan and Thatcher were great, or think capitalism is the bees knees, I have words to say to you - some other day. If you're opposing fascists today, godspeed.
Remember this meme?

When you're fighting fascists, it doesn't matter if you're fighting fascism side by side with a Hillary supporter or a neoliberal. You're fighting fascism side by side with an antifascist.

Save the political minutae for Twitter the day after.
If you're standing up to Nazis in Portland, or somewhere else in the US tomorrow?

Stay hydrated, don't get seperated from the group, make sure you know who nearby knows first aid, make sure you know your rights, and most importantly

Make it absolutely miserable to be a Nazi.
