I love bartering. It's been a fascinating part of my consulting work. About 10% of my clients pay in trade for services they offer, and it makes my life a better place. It allows them to get info they couldn't afford otherwise.
One of my clients is a small business owner in Houston who has cash flow issues but can get me discounts, hookups, connections, phone calls, favors, all kinds of stuff. The info I'm providing him and his team is making a big difference. And I've got concert tickets otw.
We have a tendency to think about income as money - we can bring in streams of income that are not limited to dollars. We don't have to use the system they presented us with. I hope to greatly expand my bartering agreements in the next few years.
This year I helped one client write a grant proposal in exchange for consulting work for me. I traded some business admin work for a storage space. I helped an auto shop with marketing in exchange for moving help. It's awesome.
When we think about what we need, many people say money. We don't actually need money - we need what money can get us. Sometimes we can look right past the dollar and consider what it will get us, what we actually need at the time, and work from there.

My first experience with bartering was at garage sales, flea markets, and gun shows as a child - but in communities where we aren't used to these conversations, we have to talk to each other about what we need and what we have to offer.
It's actually quite radical to keep money, banks, and 'the man' out of the system we use to get what we need. Sharing economies and social enterprise business models are examples of some of the reparadigming we can do when we think about #HowTheSystemWorks
