Soon on @RNBreakfast we will hear @ScottludlAm winning the nuclear waste debate AGAIN. Yes. Listen here kooks -->…
Here we go. There will be an online discussion on radioactive waste - low level, the gowns the medical waste - but also spent fuel and reprocessing wastes - very different streams. It's not clear, due to secrecy, which will be dumped in SA.
Nobody disputes the importance of radiotherapies, says @Scottludlam . But the materials are spread across 100 sites, scattered and unmanaged. The government has been sitting on a business case for 2 years, including keeping the shite where it is, rather than transporting it.
Oh the petals don't like the use of the term dump for the filthy toxic shite. Every time you move radioactive waste, you create more radioactive waste. It contaminates everything it touches. There is double handling if you move it at all.
Our contention, particularly with the reprocessed and spent fuel, is that its in a secure facility at Lucas Heights, in a concentrated area of expertise, the Feds are there, it's safest there, rather than on the edge of a farming or Aboriginal community.
This material will still be dangerous in 2 or 3 hundred years. That's the reason we are having this conversation. It does no justice to the debate or the communities to continually downplay this stuff as inconsequential. It will last HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
The industry, not just in Australia, has not made the case that remote dumping is the best way forward.
Land being volunteered for a price IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC METHOD YOU FOOL. It does nothing to assess risks of bioavailability, weather, security.
Thanks @frankelly08 and @RNBreakfast for a good debate about nuclear waste with @Scottludlam and whoever that Ben was.
