I mean, when Black women told you that Twitter's business model relies on keeping people who will tweet for hours on the platform regardless of their behavior what did you think we meant? Twitter needs harassers, kooks and so on to keep the metrics up.
Case in point, some of you remember the guy I have tweeted about in the past who made a patreon to get paid to stalk & harass women & called it performance art. Fun fact, he spent up to 23 hours a day online. On twitter sending & deleting threats. He would camp out in mentions
Twitter knows about him (law enforcement knows, other platforms know, everyone knows) and here's the thing, Patreon shut down his account. It took a while & was a mess, but they stepped in. Twitter? Not so much. Even after he was being prosecuted.
Now I know a lot of people have gotten mad at the various faces of Twitter Support & hell some of that anger is probably legit. But overwhelmingly they are just here to be your targets. They don't have the power to go against oh say...@jack who clearly doesn't care who gets hurt
And listen, I'm fine & pretty well insulated these days. But the danger isn't just the kooks who follow a Sandy Hook denier. Or the pizza gate bullshit either. It's the fact that a metric that relies on obsession is how Twitter sells itself to advertisers.
It's easy to pretend that what happened to me & so many others on here won't happen to you. But hi, I didn't have a blue check, had only published a handful of articles...and I literally never met this man. He still locked on for a good year or so
Sooner or later Twitter is going to go under, be replace by Mastodon or ello or something I haven't even used yet. There's a company called Pillowfort I am watching with great interest. Their model is an updated Tumblr'esque setup & I am wondering if Twitter users will adopt it
Either way, Twitter's already dead. It doesn't know it yet, but these decisions guarantee a platform overrun by the kid of users who drive off the folks who have added value to this site. And if @jack can't see it or counts on this staying relevant? MySpace Tom will explain
And here's the thing, for someone like me who used to be a heavy Twitter user? I'm here easily half the time I used to be & that's going to keep declining. I don't even enjoy Twitter now. If it wasn't for the work I get here I'd be gone already.
And listen if @Pillowfort_io takes off? Don't be surprised. I know a lot of people who are like me, just waiting for critical mass of a new platform. Nothing else.
