OK here's the thing. I'm a journo who shows to protests. I have definitely been on the wrong side of antifa and I can tell you for a surety that not everyone in that group of folks is well-intended.

Also, I know about infiltrators and agitators. So, I keep reactions measured.
Example: I was covering a Trump rally in WV and I spoke to some of the militiamen that had showed up with logos that I didn't already know, so I asked about them. Some college kid saw that interaction, and after that the local antifa decided I was suspect.
Now five seconds on my Twitter will tell you where my loyalties lie, and I'm from that area. None of the antifa in attendance were over 25, which meant they were college kids. They didn't know who was local or really anything about the area excepting they lived there now.
Y'all will know how hard I had to control my giggles when the college kids tried to deny me access to a BLM rally on the basis of my not being radical enough

you can bet how well it went for them when they asked for my credentials.
Them: who are you with
Me: myself
Them: no who do you write for
Me: myself, I freelance
Them: we don't let fascists in here
Me: okay
Them: that means you
Me: good luck with that *waves at the protest keynote who's a friend of mine and passing by*
Two weeks later, one of them pings me in my DM. Horrified, frustrated, wondering why if I was at the rally I didn't write about it.

I explain that actually, the only thing I could have written is that some fucking children were unilaterally denying access to an event
And it turns out that in the end, it was someone none of *them* knew that was leading that charge. They all, being kids, followed that leadership.

The leader was law enforcement. They wanted journos to write the story that antifa was fucking kids denying public access.
I have never forgotten that lesson. I could have wandered off and written the “antifa will physically intimidate you if they don’t like the questions you ask” story, but it smelled weird

Because it was. I didn’t have the full picture.
By the same token, I have absolutely seen some spoiled white middle class kids smashing up a cop car and jetting out of Delmar and leaving black people with the charges.

Any decentralized movement is prone to people using its banner for their own bullshit.
So there isn’t an equivalency to be made: I’ve been harassed or had my equipment damaged or been assaulted by purported antifa as often as I have been Nazis in the last years.

What many journos seem to not understand is that there’s antifa then there’s antifa cosplay.
Knowing that law enforcement spends far more resources on infiltrating the left than they do the right (which is easily knowable from their public records) makes one wary of printing anything as pure fact, if one is wise
Which does not change the fact that I’ve been punched in the face twice and been robbed three times on location, and each of these has been from people wearing the colors and bearing the banners of leftist groups.

Truth is hard to discern in a time of lies.
Tbh if I didn’t have open sympathies with the left, if I hadn’t been an activist, if I wasn’t from the fuck-you bottom class? I’d be writing stories about antifa being anti-press too, from the facts I would have gathered on the ground.
Hell, from the *treatment* I’ve been given on the ground. Hard but true fact: a right winger will always give you a polite interview. A left winger will tell you they hope your mom gets fucked by Elon Musk’s biggest drill. Rule ain’t hard and fast, but it’s a rule of thumb.
