Yeah this is why I'm such a stick in the mud about how "luxury goods don't really count." They're expensive enough that they can travel through 300 middlemen. That's WHY jewelry etc were the only things still moving to/from Europe in the middle ages.
Grain shipments from Egypt to Europe? The global olive oil trade? wine? pottery? textiles? That was stuff that had to be shipped pretty directly from where it was made to where it was actually used; wasn't valuable enough to support a bajillion middlemen along the way.
Which means looots of people had to have the ships/caravans, navigational knowledge, & trade contacts to voyage deliberately from one region or continent to another.
Similarly the movement of macaws from the Amazon to the southwest US 1,000+ years ago suggests fairly direct trade. Macaws need pretty specific care so it's tough to just hand them off to new traders repeatedly & expect them to stay healthy & alive the whole journey
See also chickens & sweet potatoes showing that there was trade contact btwn South America & Polynesia, Indonesian fisherman trading with Aboriginal Australians, etc etc. Long-distance, cross-continent and trans-ocean trade- including of food- is NORMAL.
So yeah local food is a good concept and all

but it really troubles me when sold with "people ALWAYS used to eat locally and now food travels and that's unnatural and a source of modern health problems."

That's such bullshit.

It's very ignorant about history & humanity.
