So, last week I indicated my interest to help people review their CVs, which I have been doing. But then, I think it's wiser to also spell out common errors and also give generally understanding that can guide your CV writing *Thread*
P. S I only committed to reviewing CVs and not writing them for FREE. I get paid to write CVs. So if you're interested in me working on your CV for you, you can reach out. If not, then maybe this thread would help you work it yourself.
One of your biggest "enemies" as a job applicant is an ATS. It's what screens your CV to help shortlist for the recruiters. You must learn how to write a CV for the ATS. Or else, your cv may never get to an human being for review talk less of shortlisting. So, here are my points
1. It's advisable to write your names as First name and Surname (in that order). Many ATS may not recognize your middle name and may take it as surname.
2. Some ATS machines can't read some fonts. Yup! Many can't read Times New Roman sef. So, generally use Sans Serif type of fonts.
3. It's advisable to Write your phone number as +2348050000000 and also only have one.
4. A personal data column is absolutely irrelevant except any of such data is a criteria for the job applied. It's best you keep them away to help your recruiters not to be bias against you. Remember they are human. But truly, it's absolutely irrelevant. If it's needed, put it up
5. All those clichés you write as Objective or career objective, just scrap it. It's irritating.
6. If you've had an experience, you shouldn't have a career objective but a Career Summary or Professional / Summary. A career summary is like a sales pitch or elevator speech. Take it as you having 3 seconds to make a solid first impression or toast a girl or guy lol.
7. If you've not had an experience, a career objective is fine but not the usual clichés.
8. The use of a summary or objective is to give the recruiter reasons to keep on reading your resume. If not, it'll likely be thrashed.... Recruiters don't have TIME!
9. It's cool to highlight your skill sets. But do it straight to the point.
10. While writing your experience, stop telling what your responsibilities were. They don't care! Speak of what you achieved (they are different) and use action verbs.
11. Your primary and secondary school details are irrelevant. Take them off.
12. Your hobbies, interests are irrelevant. Take them off.
13. Know this - YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT APPLIED. Thousands did too. And its many times one human being selecting. Hence the following;
13a. Your very long CV doesn't impress anyone. So it's not a plus. Keep irrelevant information out of it.
13b. Give good spacing in your CV. A compressed line spacing type of CV can give a recruiter a headache. Keep it easy to read.
14. Make use of keywords relevant to your industry and job applied for for more ATS optimization. Be careful though. Too much of it can spot your CV as spam and thrash it.
15. Don't misuse the bold format and bullet points. It's meant to help your recruiter narrow down to key info on your CV. Using it anyhow waters the effect. Be careful.
16. Be careful of grammatical errors. It's irritating reading silly errors from a graduate.
17. There are many more hints and guidelines to say, so maybe if you ask, I can help you out. But no I'm not writing CVs for FREE. if you want me to, Send a DM. I could give you a fair price.
18. Although I'm in the field of / experienced in sales / business development, Account management and customer relationship management, I'm also a professional CV writer. My name is Henry Tugbiyele. If you've got a bigger opportunity for me too, I'm available. Let's talk. Cheers
Kindly retweet this thread please, someone may need it. Especially someone unemployed, been applying and tired or wants to change jobs. RT. Thanks
So the Invite was sent for the #FinchEndOfTheYearParty and the outfit had to be creative. It was themed #9jaMeetsTheWest and so had to be reflected in your dressing. I started thinking of how to turn up for the event.... It was hard sha. 😜
So I reached out to Her Excellency @theprettytailor and we discussed on a style option. The plan was to dress western in some 9ja way and she killed it. Trust me the picture does no justice to this Ankara Studded Bomber Jacket. It was MAAADDDD!!
