FRIDAY. The final frontier, the last crusade, the pantsless parade. But you're not done yet. A beast hunts you. A beast called SELF-DOUBT. But you have a blade forged from your own unrealized awesomeness. Kill The Doubt before The Doubt kills you! FATE HAS CHOSEN YOU, QUALMSLAYER
And now a more serious addendum to my INANE MOTIVATIONAL TWEET -- though in that tweet I call doubt a 'beast,' I often think of it as a kind of structure. An obstacle: emotional and mental, but physical in how I imagine it.
The good kind of doubt is a hill -- because any hill is conquerable. It may be hard, but with diligence and strategy (and sometimes, time) you can climb that hill, that mountain, and get to the top. Maybe you fight a couple Yetis along the way: SO WHAT, FIGHT THEM YETIS
But doubt can manifest as other structures, too -- it can transform from a speedbump or a hill or a mountain to a tall, smooth wall. Or a room that closes you in with a door that locks. Or a lightless, slick-walled pit.
Now it must be noted that sometimes this isn't run-of-the-mill doubt -- it's depression and you can't just Un-Doubt your way out of that. That takes a savvier strategy that I am not fit to give you. Depression lies, and those lies are like from an abuser: lies meant to limit you.
It's also worth noting that sometimes our doubt is a normal thing, a healthy thing we have that gives us an internal check-and-balance -- but also, doubt can be a structure built by other people to trap us in.
Abusers of every stripe will do their best to convince you that you can't do a thing, can't complete a thing, don't belong here, and you hear that often enough, you memorize it like a song, a song that gets stuck in your head and you eventually think is original to you.
But you didn't make up those lyrics, that tune, that's someone else planting that malevolent melody in your head, and it's worth trying to see the times when your self-doubt isn't really self-doubt, but rather, the doubt of someone else you have adopted like a feral cat.
It's worth remembering that doubt is just some made-up shit. Maybe you made it up, maybe someone else made it up, but it's only functional when it gives you a realistic view of the obstacles ahead -- not when it stops you cold in your tracks.
To go back to the structure, view the doubt in yourself -- the things you fear you cannot do -- as a hill or mountain, and I think (at least for me) that's healthier. Difficult but conquerable. Not a wall you cannot climb or a pit you cannot escape.
then again what the fuck do I know, I just mouth off about magic skeletons
now if you'll excuse me I have to go write six more pages of this [REDACTED] comic book

also buy my books, please, if I don't sell at least 8 books a day, a bomb inside my heart goes off, WHERE THE FUCK IS KEANU REEVES WHEN I NEED HIM
