A roman King decided to add January & February to the calendar to organize winter pushing everything number named off by 2. Septem(7) became 9, Octo(8) became 10, Novem(9) became 11 & Decem(10) became 12. Fun fact: the OG roman calendar only had 10 months and started in March.
A common misconception about the calendar (which I held until a Google search a few minutes ago) is that July and August, the months named for Julius and Augustus Caesar, were the months added to throw everything off. But that isn't true. The names were changed but they're OGs.
The original name for July was Quintilis and August was Sextilis. These are also number named months being 5 and 6 respectively. So by adding January and February they too were thrown off from their original number names becoming the 7th & 8th months.
We just never knew that bc they were renamed for the Caesars. Another fun fact: when Jan & Feb were added they were considered the end of the year, not the beginning. So the year actually ran from March to February, not January to December.
