Neil Simon’s reliance on a narrow set of archetypes surely caused his reputation and influence to diminish. But this may be an even bigger cause: his comedy was based on jokes, a practice now widely viewed as corny and suspect.
That first joke isn’t top notch Simon. My point is, per “Dying is easy; comedy is hard,” a joke risks rejection, because, oddly, everyone has a different sense of humor. Non-joke comedies, though often said to be “risky,” lack this specific type of risk.
