Calculations are based on $2,497 / 412 lbs. = $6.06, this average will run from $6.50 to $6.75 per pound for #organic pasture grazed, grass-fed beef. This is about the price of one pound of ground grass-fed beef at a #farmersmarket or at #WholeFoodsMarket. 1 pound is 0.453592kg
...apologies for the heart attacks based on earlier tweets with the extra zero. [I gave myself one too] This is the dressed weight price - or carcass of the cow alone.
"Dressed weight refers to the weight of an animal after being partially butchered, removing all the internal organs and oftentimes the head as well as inedible portions of the tail and legs." The Beef Site. November 22, 2006.
Weight: At birth #Boran or #Zebu calves weigh about 28kg for males and 25kg for females. Mature cows are medium sized averaging a live weight of 350 - 400kg, with great mothering skills. Mature bulls can weigh 500–800kg, with carcass ratio of 52%.
Having been in #Africa for over a thousand years, they are very well adapted to local conditions and parasites. #Boran cattle are known for their fertility, early maturation (more so than other #Zebu or #Maasai breeds), hardiness, and docility..../1
../2 The Kenyan Boran cattle derived their name from the #Borana Oromo people also called the #Boran who are a subethnic section of the #Oromo people who live in southern Ethiopia (Oromia) and northern Kenya.
source: Steven L. Danver (2015). Native Peoples of the World: An Encyclopedia of Groups, Cultures and Contemporary Issues. Back to the Beef Story. Pastoralists are given 20,000/- Kenya shillings for whole cows by #NRT who say they're improving lives of 'Kenyans'.
This #NRT model of #CONservation is not working. That's one. So NRT has to pack and go.
Secondly, Pastrolists have the ability to deal with foreign markets directly. Third, men & women can use the bones, teeth, horns to make jewellery + hides to make #leather goods
What #NRT is doing as @kepaja_trust reported, is they are paying #Pastoralists peanuts for the cattle in order to DE-STOCK them - is this 'helping "communities"? By impoverishing them? By taking their lands by force? A carcass is 650/- per half kilo. The Carcass.
Which means, 1 kg of pasture fed, organic, free range beef is 1300/-. How heavy are those bulls? Do the math because I don't want to make a mistake and give anyone else any heart attacks, myself included. But it's not anywhere close to 20K...
