It’s amazing to me how many people jump to mental illness as a cause of gun violence when taking guns from domestic violence perpetrators would be way more effective.
“Mental illness” is so broad a category as to be useless but the people who lecture us about not being able to define “assault rifles” think this one will work itself out.
And if you have a Constitutional right to a gun, I don’t see how a person who has never been convicted of anything could be deprived of that right without due process.

How’s that gonna work?
I think we have to grapple with the fact that the reason we buy the “mentally ill” argument is because mass killers are predominantly white and it’s never a white man’s fault when he goes off.
People jump to “mental illness” as the explanation for mass killings by white men before they have evidence, the same way that it’s immediately terrorism if a brown person does it.
But also, I never hear anyone saying, “well, it’s the mentally ill!” suggesting we do anything for the mentally ill.

I would love it if we treated people for illnesses in this country. Wouldn’t that be great.
TL;DR, blaming mental illness for guns and death is basically another version of thoughts and prayers.
My high-level solution:

Don’t seat Kavanaugh

Abolish the second.
