Long Thread Alert!
I have meant to do a thread on operation Linda Boni for a while now but the complexity of the theatre made me lazy. Tonight however I must do it, if only for the 5 soldiers sent to their deaths in today. This is very painful for me. #StateOfDefence
Ladies and gentlemen, we are at war. It is a fact very conveniently forgotten by the citizenry and our media can not be bothered to remind us of this important fact. However the enemy does not forget, does not rest. He tests us every day, with success.
His success is largely due to you and me. It is because we have forgotten that we are at war that he's succeeding. It is because we are no longer looking at @kdfinfo with scrutiny that operational commanders are getting away with criminal negligence. We are failing our soldiers!
Since 2011, when Operation Linda Nchi began, the Department of Defence (KDoD) has recieved a total of $ 6.8 Billion from the exchequer. We have next to nothing to show for this colossal bill.
As we speak, we are woefully (and I mean eye wateringly deficient) in almost all sectors of our defence forces.
Air defence is stuttering, our air squadrons are getting thiner by the day with no replacement fighters in sight, 50th Air Calvary (helicopter anti-armour) is at best at 20% of its strength, Transport squadrons can barely make meaningful resupply (at least the C27s are coming)
Engineering brigades are not prepared for the challenges we are facing, Motorised brigades are ill equipped (just look at Boni) for the job. At least the Navy seems to be kiasi okay, but even them are poorly prepared for the new neighbours we have in the region.
The one thing we seem to have really got the hang of is our special operations regiment and Intelligence. They are good, they are prepared but sadly they are still ill equipped. As a punishment for their lethality, they are being misused.
Jobs that our jack-of-all-trades GSU and @APSKenya can do are now being done by Rangers, Special Forces and 20th Para battalions. A lack of coherence in joint operations has meant the military always bullies it way to taking lead even in domestic ops like Linda Boni.
While this may sound good, it is not. By deploying these crack units internally, the war front in Somalia is thinned out of experienced operators. This means that instead of damming the flow then scooping out the water, we are trying to dry the flood by scooping out the water.
The surveillance and interdiction gap has allowed Al Shabab to open up supply lines from Somalia to their forest hideouts in Lamu. In turn it has allowed them to build IEDs and use them with impunity INSIDE KENYA!
Now back to the issue of IEDs, how do commanders in Lamu allow their men to drive through IED hot spots like Mangai, Basuba etc in unprotected vehicles? Walahi please help me understand, is it complacency, ignorance, cavalierness or just plain old dereliction of duty?
How many men do we have to loose before someone finally acts? How many coffins do we have to drape in the flag before command finally wakes up to the massive capability gap in our deployed forces?
In 2010, we took delivery of 67 OTT M26 Puma Mine Resistant Ambush Proof Vehicles for the KDF. We have well over 4000 troops deployed in Somalia, Obviously the number of M26 MRAPs should have been higher.
In 2016, we bought only 75 MRAPs for the GSU/@NPSOfficial_KE . We have way over 2000 policemen deployed in Lamu alone, the MRAPs should have been more
Now the MRAPs on their own are not a watertight insurance against personnel IED deaths, in fact no vehicle has yet been invented that is immune to a blast, but they increase the rate of survival by troops, by our sons and daughters, our fathers and mothers
This is a question to those that in the NSAC and those that have the presidents ear. How much is enough? How many more until we get serious? How many more until we fit our police helicopters with cameras? How many more until we crack down on malaise and corruption in the army?
How many more until we bring our army to full strength? How many more until we solve the silly supremacy wars? How many more until we prioritise training and equipping of our forces? How many more? cc @FredMatiangi @NAssemblyKE @JBoinnet #RachelOmamo @UKenyatta @NziokaWaita
