Good morning! I'd like to talk about feels and their limits.
Today's story is about "dialogue" -- the notion that we can solve America's problems by talking it out. Our players are @nowthisnews, purveyor of feel-good videos, and a guy who threatened to assault and stalk me. /1
/2 This is the @nowthisnews video in question. Several people put it in my Facebook and Twitter timeline, rejoicing that it demonstrates the possibility of dialogue. It features some Parkland students and some folks NowThis describes as "gun enthusiasts."
/3 This gentleman, lauded by @nowthisnews for his productive discourse and described as a "gun enthusiast," may look familiar to you.
/4 That's Jason Lee Van Dyke. You might remember by coverage of him and his threats against me and others.…
/5 Our friends at @nowthisnews are enthused by the quality of Mr. Van Dyke's gun discourse here. It's possible that it's not a representative sample. Here is some of his other discourse.
/6 Here's another fun sample of his discourse, where I'm the white whale to his Ahab. I redacted the signature block because Twitter previously suspended me for posting it.
/7 But that was a while ago. Is JLVD still around? Why, of course! He's involved in community activism ......
/8 ... political outreach ......
/9 ...and all sorts of good-old-fashioned American litigation.…
/10 In summary:
1. if you want to feel good, watch a fucking kitten video. Don't watch some sloppy hack's video whitewashing bigots.
2. Exercise skepticism about the "dialogue" narrative. Evil exists. Even if it occasionally talks sweetly, it's still evil. /end
Next up on @nowthisnews: "Can community bonfires help bring YOUR neighborhood together in these troubled times?"
