"Love of police brutality is strongly bipartisan. This is what happens when one party loves 'law & order' and the other one loves public sector unions."
Soooo you didn't read the linked story

Dems have always loved police brutality just as assuredly as Reps. Particularly white liberals who rely on police to keep the poors away.

And writing laws to cover up brutality? It's all aboard…
You: "Dems don't do this!"

Also you: "Well. Dems do it because it's a one-party state and principles don't matter when you control everything."

NC is *not* a one-party state. So presumably principles matter here, right?

These votes though... 🤔

California. Oregon. Illinois. New York. Maryland. North Carolina. Georgia.

Pick any state. One party or two. Blue, red, or purple. And you'll find a state with Dems who kowtow to police.

Guess it's a good thing I just put your own words in the thread, so everyone else can judge for themselves whether they're lies or not.

It's almost like I've been doing a weekly podcast on these issues for over a year now – plus 6 years of defense work – and developed more than a soundbite-level understanding of the issues?

Oh I've stipulated Rs are worse plenty of times, especially under Trumpism. I'm just bemused by the "rah rah Dems are GREAT!" on here, when my friend circle consists of mostly black Dems distrustful of white Dems on issues like policing

No. It started in undergrad, became acute in law school, and hit rage-inducing the more I paid attention to it.

Sadly it's a lot more than just municipalities. In NC, court costs go to the legislature's General Fund, where it then has earmarks back out for the courts, for police, etc etc etc

Here's the cost sheet from an earlier thread a couple years ago, where speeding ticket money goes for each case

GCJF is the General Court of Justice Fee, which is General Fund money earmarked for courts and the State Bar's Legal Aid stuff

LEOB-RF is the Law Enforcement Officer Benefit and Retirement Fund (the police pension)

The rest should be self-explanatory

And the Legal Aid allotment has been slashed since 2016, because who needs representation amirite?

So now $13.50 of every $188.00 speeding ticket in NC goes back to the police writing the tickets

The rest goes to the politicians in Raleigh…
Democrats dramatically hiked court costs from $71 in 1991 to $143 in 2010, all to increase government spending without raising taxes

Then Republicans realized they could do it too, and raised it to the current $188+ in 2011

Also, you'll undoubtedly be shocked (shocked!) to learn the most-cited offenses in NC are the ones that bring in money for police and politicians

From a different old thread:

(8 of the Top 10 are run-of-the-mill traffic offenses. At $188+ a pop.)
And it totally f*cks the incentives. What they've done – on a bipartisan basis – is gut "recurring" court $$ paid from normal tax receipts, and made an entire branch of Govt dependent on court costs from charging poor people for crimes (real and imagined)

"Democrats aren't unprincipled, they're just spineless cowards!"

Eh, ok I guess

Learned the theory-vs-practice distinction very quickly in trial about a guy's priors and the glorious wonders of Rule of Evidence 404(b)

👨🏻‍⚖️: "We don't let a Defendant's prior offenses come in because it taints the judge's/jury's view of the accused and whether they committed this particular crime."

👨🏻‍⚖️: "LOL jk I'm totally bullsh*tting you. It's admitted."
