here's a thread about how crazy things are on Twitter
that's an old story, by now, of course... something i ramble about a lot
but this is also about how unsettlingly politicized Twitter's own policies have become when it comes to censuring users who comment on certain issues....
unlike trolls who’ve come after me, I’ve never been suspended or censured by Twitter. But I feel like it’s only a matter of time before that happens. In recent months, several mainstream commentators whom I respect have been slapped down by Twitter for saying reasonable things…
... this week’s example is @MeghanEMurphy, a well-known Vancouver-based feminist who’s written for @rabbleca, @QuilletteM & @walrusmagazine. This week, she was on @CBC Radio. she’s well-known for her work with Vancouver’s rape-crisis centre …not exactly an alt-right loon, rite?
nevertheless, this week, Twitter sent @MeghanEMurphy a note advising that it had “temporarily limited some of [her] account features,” because she had “violated our rules against hateful conduct”…. sounds serious, right?
except ... this “hateful conduct” consisted of criticizing a dominatrix, BDSM enthusiast & sex-trade advocate who's seeking to co-opt Vancouver's Women’s March as a celebration of prostitution. he also wants to defund Vancouver Rape Relief out of what appears to be activist spite
in short, Twitter is telling a veteran feminist that she is engaging in “hateful” conduct for practicing her feminist activism. even if u think Murphy should use more politically correct words, or u have different views on the sex trade, on what planet is this *hate speech*?
and if a veteran feminist activist is supposedly a hate-monger according to Twitter, who among us *isn’t*? how did one of the most important communications companies in the world become co-opted by the ever-narrowing ideological conventions of a single gender-activist clique?
but wait. it gets weirder .... when @MeghanEMurphy complained to Twitter, asking rhetorically, "am I no longer permitted to reports facts on your platform?" ... that, *too*, was labeled as "hateful conduct"
i suppose I'm asking that very same question in this thread.... so I can't really guarantee that I, too, won't get my account suspended or whatnot. And if that happens, you'll know why. I won't be happy about it. But it won't be a good look for Twitter either.
also worth noting that @MeghanEMurphy is hardly the only feminist who has been reported/targeted for Twitter sanction. there are hundreds of them. many of these targeted women are smeared as "TERFs" (a derogatory epithet that now is increasingly used interchangeably with "woman")
this isn't a "free-speech" issue. None of us have any right to use Twitter or any other privately run social media service. Twitter can throw us off for any reason it likes, or no reason at all. but it should nevertheless be concerning to Twitter users that this is happening
also notable that canada's hash-tagging feminist twitter army (men & women alike)—the folks who worry that poetry readings aren't safe spaces for women, the ones who shouted loudest about how Steve Galloway was a monster... where are they? i hear a lot of crickets...
it's like they love celebrating feminism...
but actual women? meh. not so much
p.s. It's been 20 minutes since my post went up. And I haven't been suspended yet (*to my knowledge*).
