I used Twitter to vent for over a year. it was the only way to get out my fear, frustration, and anger. Then, almost 6 months ago, I decided to try to do something. Went to a Democratic primary debate for my congressional district, #NJ11
Met all the candidates, but one stood out for me, both because I liked what she said and the kindness she personally showed me that night. Her name is @MikieSherrill and she inspired me to finally get involved.
Since then, I've been volunteering for her. I have multiple chronic illnesses, so I wasn't sure what I could do. I've never been comfortable with the whole hard sell thing, so I thought I'd be bad at phone banking or canvassing. I was wrong.
Yes, I was nervous as hell about doing either, so for the first few days, I assembled lawn signs. Soon, all were finished. I finally decided to try more. My first call, I stuttered my way thru. At the first door, I was so anxious my hands were shaking.
Guess what- with practice, I got better. My confidence increased, my pitch got smoother and now I'm damned good at both. That feeling of hopelessness that had been hanging over me since November 8, 2016 faded. Replaced by determination.
I wish I could share with you all the feeling of empowerment I know feel. It's been absolutely transformative. I now volunteer 20-25 hours a week. If everybody reading this post put in 10% of that time every week, we can do this. We can win, but only if we all take the time.
I'll end with this. Sign up to canvass for a shift next weekend.
If you can't, do a phone bank shift.

"I'll volunteer closer to the election." Well, it's that time now.
A lot of apathy and ignorance out there. We can change that.
