A few interesting passages from Meenakshi Jain's book "The India They Saw"
Foreign Accounts - 8th - 16th centuries.
"Hindus eat no meat, no cow flesh, no mutton, no chicken. Their banquets were all on pork; and pigs are in great abundance...with Mahommedans they neither eat nor drink."
People on the Malabar coast.
"..climate is hot, the usages of the people pure. They are hot headed, and wherever they go, they carry..their bows and arrows. Should anyone steal an ox, the chief verifies the number of oxen, and the
rightful owner seizes all the property of the offender, and he is put to death"
Customs at Malabar.
"Malabar is the pepper country..extends along the coast from Goa to Quilon..It is the custom of the infidels in the Malabar that no Muslim may enter their houses or eat from their vessels; if he does so they break the vessels or give them to the muslim"
Cow worship.
"The inhabitants of Nahrwara..have a great veneration for the oxen, they inter them after death"
"the idolatrous inhabitants of this kingdom show particular reverence to the ox; and none..induced to eat the flesh of oxen. But there is a particular class..gaui, who although they eat of the flesh, yet dare not kill the animal; but when they find a carcass the gaui eat of it"
Sacredness of Cow in Calicut
"In this harbour one may find everything that can be desired. One thing alone is forbidden, namely, to kill a cow, or eat its flesh:whosoever discovered slaughtering or eating one of these animals immediately punished with death"
Worship of cows in Calicut
Varna and Jati
The castes differed from each other but lived together in the same towns, villages and mixed together in the same houses and lodgings.
Interestingly, Kshatriyas and Shudras associated by marrying into each other's communities.
