Hey NC/VA, Floridian here. Looks like #HurricaneFlorence might hit as a Cat 4. It might not. It might spin off to sea. It might be a big pain for no reason. But as someone who lived through Hurricane Ivan... you don't want to take the chance of staying. Thread:
Ivan had weakened to a 3 by the time it impacted Pensacola. Read excellent @pnj coverage here of what it felt like even still:…
We lived 40+ miles inland & stayed. I was young, but I'll never forget the sound of the wind screaming. We could hear the tornadoes tearing through the woods. The next morning, all the trees were bent- except the ones that were twisted like a blender where twisters came through
We probably shouldn't have stayed. But the wind is usually not the worst part in a storm like this. Here's what rising water did to the I-10 bridge.
Here's what the storm surge did to the Grande Lagoon neighborhood, where people drowned. Read more:…
And then let's assume you survive the wind, tornadoes, and floods. Cool. Have you thought about how many days you can go without power, running water, access to gas stations, etc.?
We were fine. We lived in the country, and country people take care of each other. But it was still hard not to have power for nearly 2 weeks. Do you know your neighbors? Who has a generator? Who has a chainsaw to cut you out of your driveway?
Anyway. All this to say, you know what's much easier than all of this? Just leave. Hurricanes don't check to see if you've made a brave Facebook post or how much you aren't afraid of them before messing you up.
And if you stay? For crying out loud, be prepared. How much water do you need per day? Nonperishable food? Batteries and flashlights? Literally the bare minimum. Have it.
