All this talk of "he was only 17" and "it was 35 years ago" has dredged up unpleasant memories of when Brock Turner's father complained about the consequences of "20 minutes of action." I have argued in my most recent work that we fix on specific durations of time in politics
because they have meaning to us and refer to processes that we believe are important. What I am struck by in these statements is that women's time is no where to be seen. The years of therapy, the school leaves of absence, the days off from work in crippling depression or anxiety
the fraught waiting for a period, the doctors visits, the pressing of charges, & more. At best, time might help someone heal from an assault. For many, the wound never vanishes. On behalf of those women and their time, let's stop obsessing about a few minutes of their assailants'
time, or the decades of time since the assault, and start focusing on the temporal consequences of assault for those who experience it. From there we might build out a different way to think about justice in the context of sexual assault. #politicalvalueoftime
From the excellent @jbouie piece out today.

"I think it derailed me substantially for four or five years," [Ford] says.…
Instead of obsessing about some imaginary Senate deadline, let’s let the temporal needs of the person who is traumatized set the schedule.
