The idea that only trans people experience gender dysphoria really frustrates me because I've researched the history of gender dysphoria as a diagnosis. I've found examples of clinicians talking about how gender dysphoria can be caused by trauma and internalized homophobia.
Gender dysphoria was invented as an umbrella term to cover all forms of psychological distress concerning sex/gender that drove a person to want to change their body. It was coined by Norman Fisk, a psychiatrist who worked at one of the early gender clinics.
Fisk soon noticed that only some of the patients coming to his clinic fit the criteria for transsexualism as it was then defined. The rest were a diverse lot and included gay people, transvestites, people suffering from psychosis and sociopaths.
He came up with "gender dysphoria syndrome" to name what he saw as variety of "gender disorders" that all lead a person to want to change their sex.
Right from the start, you find gender dysphoria being used to talk about gay people who took on the symptoms of transsexualism and wanted to change sex in order to escape social stigma.
Gender clinics used to specifically screen for self-hating gay people. And I've come across case histories of gay people who felt transsexual and wanted surgery but who were helped by therapy to accept themselves as gay.
It's frustrating to hear trans people dismiss experiences like mine as not being real dysphoria when I know experiences like mine are one of reasons the term gender dysphoria came into existence in the first place.
For those interested, here's a link to an article by Fisk about how and why he came up with "gender dysphoria syndrome":

Here's one of the case studies I found about a lesbian who thought she was transsexual and wanted to transition but was helped by therapy to accept herself: booksc.org/book/30535139/…
One more thing I should add about Fisk and gender dysphoria. When he came up with the diagnosis, he also expanded which kinds of patients he would approve for sex reassignment surgery.
He would approve gender nonconforming gay people and transvestites for surgery, people he thought took on transsexual identities in order to escape social hostility, if he though they'd be happier and able to function better in society afterwards.
I should point out that other gender clinics took a different approach to screening and approving candidates than Fisk's did. Many were a lot more restrictive and only approved people who fit the criteria for "classic transsexualism".
Still, it was a real trip to track down the dude who made up the term gender dysphoria and find out that he approved people he saw as self-hating gay people for sex reassignment surgery.
