I am SICK to my stomach. This is white supremacy. This is fascism on the rise globally.…
And for those who do not know about the #WindrushGeneration - these were Black people from Caribbean nations (mostly from JA) who were INVITED by the British Gov't from 1948 - 1971 to help meet a labor shortage GB was having at the time.
GB 1971 Immigration Act gave all Commonwealth citizens who were already living in the UK the right to stay permanently. So what's going on now?? Well -as fascism is rising in the UK & "cracking down on immigrants" is not the order of the day...
Elderly members of the #WindrushGeneration are being denied services, losing their jobs and even being deported. Three deported members of the #WindrushGeneration have already died during this process. This could effect 50K long-term UK residents.
And in case you were confused about the RATIONALE behind this racist moves - this phrase they failed to meet the "necessary good character requirement" due to committing criminal offenses. Literally they are using any interactions with law enforcement to deport Black people.
This is a MIRROR to what we are seeing here in the United States. As a first gen immigrant US citizen, let me tell you that I have ACTIVE fear that my citizenship and that of my mother, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins will be stripped away. THIS IS REAL.
I am dreading having to renew my passport in a few years - deeper into this administration, I know my status as the child of an immigrant and my chosen work as an activist puts me directly into the crosshairs of additional scrutiny.
I fight because I know these issues will effect me - likely sooner than later. I'm vocal because linking the treatment of immigrants and refugees to the experiences of Black people around the globe is how we build for victory.
And just to get dissect the #WindrushGeneration a bit more - the UK facing a labor shortage, INVITED Black people from their current & former commonweath's to come to the UK for "work & opportunity" - these folks brought their spouses and children with them.
Now generations later - after these families have contributed INVALUABLY to the UK and help stem the labor shortage crisis at the time they arrived, they & their descendants are being told they don't have a right to be a UK citizen. The IRONY of all this is beyond the pale.
This is a tale as old as time - but it doesn't make it hurt any less, when our ancestor & Elder sacrificed everything to give us a better life only to see that opportunity ripped from under us just when it was to be paid out.
At last count I have 6 uncles who were part of the #WindrushGeneration - that left Jamaica to go work in the UK and brought their families with them. My cousins having to face the possibility of not being citizens 2 generations later is nausea inducing.
