Ok, so since the United States government is revving it’s engines for war on China, Iran, and russia, and we have people graduating highschool who were born at the beginning of the us wars in the Middle East, I think it’s important to understand WHY these wars keep happening.
Now, I’m 20 years old, that means the us have been engaged in full on wars in the Middle East for about 90% of my lifetime. And as long as I’ve been alive, folks have always said the same thing, some variation of “these wars aren’t helping anyone! Why do we stay?”
And, just as uniformly, people will say “war is big buisiness” but it needs to be discussed how that buisiness works, who wins and what keeps it going.
First let’s examine the local (ie within the us) economics of war. The US army is funded through taxes paid by the us citizens and what few buisinesses don’t manage to get out using tax loopholes.
But the weapons, tanks, bombs, bullets and everything else is produced by private companies, i.e Raytheon, Colt, etc. When the US preps for wars by stocking up, the us pays private companies with the public’s money. That’s one of the first points at which wars make big bucks.
This means these private companies have active interest in keeping wars going, because peace means fewer guns which means their bottom lines plummet.

But another segment that often gets left out is the bigger profits made off of what happens internationally.
This is where things start to get a little more complicated. The key word here is *Imperialism*.

Now, imperialism isn’t just when a government does something somewhere else, it’s a bit more specific then that.
Imperialism is a stage of economic developement, when capitalism has developed so much that huge swaths of the economy are controlled by a few large monopolies, sound familiar?
another aspect of imperialism is that these economy can’t survive locally, within the country, because for example to make money a buisiness has to jack up prices, and lower wages, so if they try to just work within their country they have a bunch of broke workers and pricey shit
So what are these countries to do? Simple: conquer. They either have to conquer new lands with resources so they can get the materials cheep and increase profits, or find new markets to sell their pricey shit to. Tho usually they’ll get both.
I’ll give a crash course here in this thread, but if you want more in depth here’s a great piece on imperialism.

Another thing that’ll happen is the imperialist power, after conquering the country, will either absorb the conquered territory into itself, thus building an empire. An example of this is how the United States overthrew the Hawaiian government and eventually made it a “state”
Or it will put in a government where all authority lies in the conquerer (that’s a colony, such as how the US has all power over the governance of Puerto Rico)
These processes have however, rightfully, become unpopular among the public, so what happens more often is “neocolonialism” where a government thats technically independent is empowered, but that government is dependent on the imperialist either economically
Or because without military support that government would be overthrown in an instant. That’s basically the relationship between the United States and the government it installed in Afghanistan. And it’s what they wanna do with the Syrian democratic forces and free Syrian army
These methods ensure that the United States capitalists get new markets to sell its goods, cheap materials to make those goods, and lots of cheap labor as the governments exploit the working class of the nation. All three things make profits go up for the imperialists.
They’ll sell us these wars as “spreading democracy” but in reality they’re only empowering whoever makes them the most money, no matter how many people they hurt. Just like in Iraq they’ll make up whatever lies they have to to justify their war to the public paying for it
Then they take working class folks, and the us army especially loves recruiting people from oppressed communities, and throw them out to either get shot, or kill people that they have more in common with then they do any of their commanding officers!
US army recruiters thrive in oppressed communities. Whether it’s poor people (especially people of color) in cities, or people in stagnant rural communities, as long as the folks have fuck all hope for a better life, the recruiters have their jobs cut out for them.
Tell a kid who grew up their entire life thinking they’ll never have a shot at a better life, and tell them “hey we’ll pay you big bucks and get you the fuck out of here, just sign on the dotted line”, and you’re gonna get plenty of signatures.
(That quote is something I actually had a recruiter tell me by the way, I’m not shitting you)
And the us is so soaked in pro-army propoganda, both Democrats and Republicans, that unless you stumble soon or are given the real story, you don’t even realize wtf you’re signing up for

The US ARMY ITSELF acknowledges that their recruitment goes down when folks have literally any other option for a better life.
Ok, this ended up way longer then I wanted it to go. But there’s a crash course on WHY the us government keeps going to wars and throwing our brothers and sister out to go either die, or kill other innocent people who are protecting their communities from imperialist exploitation
If we want this shit to stop, if we want to stop the deaths of working class people both from our nations and the nations our government targets to murder and exploit, we have to take down the entire damn system! We have to make it so that we have the power, not the imperialists
I realize this shit sounds like a big order, and it can be scary. But there’s people out there doing this shit.
The ANSWER coalition is an amazing group of organizations dedicated to ending war and racism. answercoalition.org
@answercoalition
Another great group is the Party for socialism and liberation. A party devoted to building a new system where the working and oppressed peoples work not to make rich people richer, but to better their communities and determine their own future! pslweb.org @pslweb
Are you in the army, or have friends, family or partners in the army? There’s resources out there for you too! @EyesLeftPod is a fantastic podcast and the folks who put it together do tons of work organizing to help make sure you and your family don’t end up dying for profit.
We gotta fight to end these endless wars for profit and for conquest, both for the communities which are ravaged and exploited and the sake of our communities. Working class people and people of oppressed communities gotta stand up together and say we won’t die in a rich mans war!
If you want more info, my dms are open and I’ll happily either give you what I’ve got or help steer you towards folks who can help you.
