The scientific method encodes an essential humility of not knowing: discard whatever is provably bunkum, and keep investigating whatever is left. That's the essence of enlightenment: stop looking for the absolute truth, become a falsehood rejectionist, as that's tenable.
The problem is when we translate this from the natural science world to social and political science. The nature of power is that we have adversaries who would like to gain control over us. We now have to expand our concept of the scientific method to include social construction.
In several domains (e.g. psychology, pharma) we now have such poor replicability & such fraud that the endeavour barely deserves the term "science". If this institution of knowledge is in such poor shape, then those of lesser rigour, like journalism, are catastrophically broken.
Specifically, you need to include the nature of evil in your model of rational inquiry. Its exclusion leaves you vulnerable to "semantic subversion", for instance through Orwellian corruption of language and hence thought (e.g. "global warming"). "Evil genius" really is a thing.
