Brief thread: Imagine trying to explain the Kavanaugh nomination to a visitor from a slightly different dimension. You'd have to explain that one branch of government is essentially reserved to graduates of two (sometimes three) professional schools. 1/
"Ah! A House of Lords for your meritocracy!" your visitor might exclaim. "But how do Yale, Harvard, and the LSAT fit into your theory of self-rule?" 2/
Then you'd have to explain Chuck Grassley, meaning you'd have to answer questions like "What's Iowa?" and "Why is the two-senators-per-state rule non-amendable in the Constitution?" /3
Finally your visitor might exclaim, "Ah! The Senate is a legislature, but for the sparsely populated, disproportionately white states! A herrenvolk House of Lords to go with the meritocratic one!" /4
Then you'd have to explain that the President, who gets to nominate the Justices, didn't win the popular vote, but that the Constitution makes the Electoral College winner the President--to ensure good judgment, moderation and consensus, that sort of thing. /5
"Ah!" your visitor might say, "Another House of Lords--not a very convincing one, but an effective one." /6
Then you'd have to explain that this all matters so much b/c we decide some of the most important national questions by letting the Justices vote on their interpretation of pieces of text dating mainly from 1789, 1791, and 1868. /7
And then you'd have to explain that everyone in the fight agrees that democracy and the rule of law are at stake. /8
And you haven't even started on patriarchy. /fin
