People who insist a system is a meritocracy just don't want to acknowledge the unfair advantages they had going in
It is not a coincidence that white men seem the most invested in the myth of the meritocracy
Even something like blind auditions for an orchestra -- the kind of real world example that's held up as what happens when you make a system that's purely about talent -- is not a real meritocracy, as there is still the question of who got access to the audition to begin with.
Who is able to access music lessons? Who has the resources to pay for instruments? Who can afford to devote their lives to the study of music? If you genuinely think there's a 1:1 correlation between having musical talent and having that access, you're not paying attention.
And look, not everyone gets to be in the orchestra. It's never going to be 100% fair. But the least we can do is acknowledge the unfairness of the system rather than pretending people who win the game do so solely because they are the best.
