The Van D*ke trial is inherently a demonstration of a network of violent white supremacist institutions demonstrating their impunity. That they’re demonstrating that impunity through a formalized process makes it no less violent and immoral.
So much of this is ‘prima facie’ wildly unjust. If the killer’s actions could in any way have been regarded as professionally justifiable, then his actions wouldn’t have been covered up *at every official level,* including by all his accessories at the scene.
I’m not suggesting that in their notorious arrogance out city’s management is incapable of making a unanimous public relations blunder, but it defies good sense to suggest that trying to hush up a $5 million payoff is the culmination of a series of good faith errors.
And yes, everyone is entitled to a presumption of innocence, and a vigorous defense. But the system was already bent over backward for Van D*ke, and the relatively exorbitant expense (and gratuitous showmanship) of his defense veered into O.J. Simpson territory.
The substance of Van D*ke’s defense, such as I’ve seen it, has been little more than gaslighting. ‘The video doesn’t show you what you can plainly see.’ ‘This has nothing to do with race. The same thing could happen to a white Ivy League student.’
Yeah, whi— I mean, right.
And there’s one other element to this of which the general public is only partially aware. The police and fire departments— dominated as they are by petty booj class traitors— are treating the impending verdict as a civic disaster in the making.
We’re talking vacations canceled, big overtime approved, ‘strike teams’ assembled & deployed, etc. Gods (and the mayor & guv) only know if the Natl Guard is also on standby. This tells me our leaders expecting the killer to walk, and they’re expecting black folks to be angry.
That means they all know— as they knew when they paid out the money and tried to hush the truth of the shooting— that they’re perpetrating a blatant injustice, and that they’ll spare no expense to demonstrate that such injustice is their official prerogative.
Even if there’s a surprise verdict (not set aside by the judge, of course), Chicago will be the scene of an official show of force designed to assure right wing trogs and polite white liberals alike that yes, the system works, and anyone unsatisfied better just swallow it.
I don’t know exactly what people are going to do, because there are too many moving people parts here with wildly different perspectives to prognosticate, but rest assured the fix is already in. ‘Our’ responses to this injustice have long since been circumscribed.
(FYI: with that last tweet I’m not suggesting that we can & should do nothing. I am saying that the system is flat out showing us that it will accept only two responses— acquiescence or open rebellion, either of which it can manage. Anything outside of that, well— just sayin’...)
