.@PreetBharara’s riveting interview with @JaneMayerNYer makes clear:
1. Ramirez is credible, bona fide; also candid about her own intoxication at the time
2. Those w/ firsthand knowledge flatly refuse to call her a liar or even dispute acct — even on background. /1
3. Even #Kavanaugh sources supplied as character witnesses (!) wouldn’t contradict Ramirez story
4. Exhaustive reporting effort by NYer, fact checking, all levels of editorial & legal; spoke with 50-100 sources
5. Mayer has been getting calls all day, every day, from others… /2
…or their attorneys, offering statements, affidavits, etc. The dam has burst.

Key take-aways:
A. Either Ramirez is genuinely mistaken (unlikely), #Kavanaugh truly has no memory (more likely), or he’s lying.
B. FBI’s Potemkin investigation… /3
…if any, was a pale imitation of New Yorker’s exhaustive reporting, as it reportedly interviewed 9 witnesses vs. NYer’s 50-100 (*just on Ramirez*)
C. FBI may have reported either nothing or just enough to weakly corroborate Ramirez’ claim w/o shifting overall weight of facts. /4
D. I would bet on the latter as justification for “Rashomon” accounts of FBI report’s contents. R’s say “nothing we didn’t know already” while D’s call “BS”
E. Once again, arbitrary deadline/severe constraints imposed by GOP undermine credibility of effort to discover truth. /5
F. Value of serious, exhaustive reporting such as @JaneMayerNYer @RonanFarrow & broader @NewYorker team here cannot be overstated. Major investment in high-stakes story with access to numerous sources on background, etc., cultivation of trusted relationships, protected sources /6
G. @JaneMayerNYer emphasized reporting this kind of case takes a LONG time. Full story of Thomas confo battle took *years* to complete. Arbitrarily slamming the door on inquiry (by FBI or media) in a matter of days can only be taken as cynical tactic to avoid fact-finding. /7
H. Beyond challenges of elapsed decades & haze of drunken stupor, those present are VERY reticent to come forward b/c it reflects poorly on them in hindsight any way you look at it. Risk-benefit is way out of whack — as it always is when victims come forward (another subject). /8
I. This kind of story inherently involves placing great trust in the news outlet (@NewYorker) as there is far more they know than they are able to tell us. Unlike e.g. NYT Trump tax fraud blockbuster, there are not thousands of pages of documents that speak for themselves. /e
