I am seeing a whole lot of white people trying to explain that "mulatto" is not a derogatory term. Well, yes it is and, by the way, you don't get to weigh in on this. I do, though.
I was born in Toronto because my 15-yr-old white Irish Catholic mother was pregnant by a 17-yr-old African American boy so her family shipped her off to grandmother's house to birth me because, well, it was 1963 in the suburbs outside of Detroit.
Giving birth to a mixed race child out of wedlock was such a travesty that that girl had to flee her country. It often blows me away that I am a Canadian by virtue of in racism and religious persecution that occurred while I was in vitro, but here we are.
"Mulatto" is a word that is derived from "mule". "Mulatto" is a word that was used to describe me and people like me for easily more than half my life. To see the @edmontonpolice use the term in an Amber Alert is problematic but it's a correctable problem.
Humans make mistakes and I trust this a mistake our police service will not make again. The white people telling me that I have no reason to be offended, on the other hand? Well, you people need to sit down. We're done here with this.
