A buddy was handing out some apples he got from a little farm stand up in the mountains.

These local farm-fresh apples were uhhhhh coated in fungicide.
They had a light powdery coating, which *can* be innocuous- often it's just dust from the field, or an inert clay like Surround (works as a sunscreen to keep apples from getting sun scald on the tree, and repels bugs too).
But! Not in this case. Right out of the bag they had that really juicy fresh apple smell, but as soon as that wore off there was that garlicky metallic "pesticide storage shed" smell that ag folks know & love.

Also featured a garlicky metallic pesticide aftertaste. 🙄
(Yeah I had a bite, don't @ me. Worry about the buddy handing out apples who'd already eaten ... like ... 5 of them bc he *doesn't* already know what fungicide tastes like.)
This might be a good time for a reminder that the #1 reason for farms to fail their food safety audit is illegal pesticide use. Usually by spraying, & then harvesting before the "don't harvest for X days after spraying this" window is up.
The food movement's done a lot of really effective publicity about how having to do food safety inspections is just so burdensome, and it locks farmers out of market channels, etc etc.
I wish it could be as frank about the fact that, sometimes there's a *reason* a farm is locked out of market channels. It's not about $ or size. Sometimes it's just bc a farm can't pass an audit, for valid reasons like "illegal pesticide use," that have nothing to do w size.
Do a lot of farms have trouble making food safety & other upgrades bc agricultural financing is a mess? Yes.

Maybe let's talk about THAT- lack of financing & chronic underinvestment in agriculture- as the problem.
There's a pinch between needs to upgrade farms for very real health & safety reasons, and between the financial resources that are actually available.

The way to fix that is to fix financing. Not "by undermining health & safety practices bc they're hard to meet."
Anyway, periodic reminder that when produce comes from a farmstand, delivery, CSA box, etc, sometimes there's a REASON that food isn't getting sold in a grocery store.

Gonna go drink a lot of water now.
