It's more than just about cheap Saudi oil (which has powered US economic growth): Saudi money also supported millions of American jobs, many in defense, education, tourism and retail over the years. Ditto in Europe.

(Saudis spend $6909/per capita in defense. US spends $1859.)
2. Obama also defended the Saudis; in his last year in office, he promised to veto a bill that Congress passed unanimously allowing families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia over alleged links to the 2001 terrorist attacks. politico.com/story/2016/09/…
3. Of course, part of Obama's calculation in vetoing the 9/11 bill was that the move could set a precedent where US could also be sued by survivors of drone strikes that accidentally kill civilians (under Obama's watch, US dropped 2 million bombs on Muslim countries).
4. Also in Obama's last year, Saudi Arabia conducted the largest mass execution since 1980, yet Democrats and Republicans in Congress, led by Trump after he took office, lined up to sell more arms to the Saudis. hrw.org/news/2016/01/0…
