It just means you can find out where each lot went. You actually have records showing that for lot X, 2 pallets went to Trader Joe's, 8 pallets to Walmart, etc.
If that sounds really goshdang basic, that's because it is. Like I said: the fact that Walmart's out here trying to make it sound like "tracebacks take days!!" is normal, is really scary.
If you have a product with a complicated supply chain like, say, shoes or cars (that are made up of a bunch of parts from all over the place), then it makes sense that a traceback for all those individual parts could take days.
Leafy greens are NOT like that. That supply chain should be going through 3 parties max, & sometimes just 1 (romaine can be picked, cleaned, & packaged in the field & shipped straight to a retailer's distribution center).
Part of food safety audits is doing a live (pretend) recall, in real time, during the audit. In other words, I've watched a lot of farms & packinghouses do this exact recall process that Walmart says take days.
For a lot of farms & packers, they easily get it done in 10 MINUTES.

For more complex ops- say, a packer that gets semis full of raw fruit, runs QA checks on each truckload, washes & packs it to order, reloads, & ships?
If they can't trace a lot of product back to where the received from, and where they shipped it to, w/in 2hrs THEY FAIL THAT QUESTION IN THE AUDIT.

Most of them get it done in more like 45-90 minutes.
In other words, a complex operation being able to do a full traceback in a max time limit of 2 hours *is the industry norm.*

Again: how in the hell does Walmart think tracing through that kind of supply chain can take "days." wtaf.
