my is my promised THREAD for my new essay: Putting the “Transgender Activists Versus Feminists” Debate to Rest (btw, it's on Medium, so please give it lots of "claps" so that others see it!)… #transgender #women #feminism #LGBTQ #gender #activism
...I saw some wild claims about my piece yesterday, so I will attempt to clarify here. my first point: there is a long history of feminist debates and discourses regarding trans ppl. Talia Bettcher discusses this in her critique of that Stock piece:… someone who has played a small part in that history, and who spends much of my time in feminist settings, I can tell you that the "feminist debate" regarding trans people is largely settled, as most contemporary feminist recognize that...
...1) trans & gender diverse ppl have always existed (see link), so therefore it is pointless (not to mention demeaning) to debate our existence – we simply *are*. or as the slogan goes: "we're here, get used to it!"...…
... & 2) feminists today acknowledge the importance of intersectionality - we can (& should!) challenge all forms of marginalization simultaneously, including both misogyny & transphobia, amongst others... I said, this is largely settled in contemporary feminism. but there will always be some anti-intersectional holdovers (such as gender critical/TERF folks) who imagine a zero-sum game between women & trans folks, where being pro-trans = anti-woman, & vice versa...
...but virtually all cis feminists I know (btw, I wouldn't mind a signal boost here) reject that view – they simply are trans-inclusive (or strive to be) and don't even bother debating gender critical/TERF ideology anymore. this brings me to point #2...…
...but 1st I need to take a short break. pls check out the essay (previous tweet) & give it claps! btw, it's not monetized. if you appreciate that I make essays like this for free, please consider supporting me on Patreon!…
ok, back w/point #2 of my piece: virtually all the "trans ppl threaten women" rhetoric today is not coming from within feminism, but from anti-trans groups (conservatives, mainstream media, & some on the left) who are amplifying/appropriating gender critical/TERF talking points..
...this is especially clear if you examine social media accounts of those most loudly expressing these views. I'm not saying that *none* of these people are gender critical/TERF. but most exhibit little to no interest in feminism, except as a cudgel to attack trans activism... other words, #feminism/"protecting women" has become the socially palatable way of expressing #transphobia these days. that & spouting pseudoscience (which I have debunked in this essay:…). aka, they aren't #feminist, just "kitchen sink" arguers...
...finally, this piece is an "open letter" to ppl who want to interview me regarding "trans activists vs feminists" debates. b/c of points #1 & 2, I refuse to "lend credence to the myth that there are valid feminist rationales for demonizing and slandering trans people"...
...I've seen 2 critiques of this last point. one from pro-trans folks who think we *should* debate these ideas. you're free to do so. I've done so in the past myself. but I do believe that there are drawbacks to (tacitly) legitimizing the "trans activists vs feminists" framing...
...the 2nd critique is from FREEZE PEACH type folks who complain that I am trying to stifle debate. I've addressed such complaints before in other places, most thoroughly here:…
...honestly, I'd much rather deal w/ppl who are unafraid to say "I hate trans ppl" (at least I know where they stand) than ppl who couch their trans skepticism/antagonism in abstract theories & calls for "open debates." FIN…
thanks for listening! & please give it lots of "claps." & if you appreciate that I make pieces like this for free, please consider supporting me on Patreon. after all, most mainstream news & media outlets wouldn't allow me to publish this piece as is:…
