Now here's a thought....and possibly a small thread as well.

But with the Gender Recognition Act consultation coming to a close tomorrow why not contemplate something really radical....like TRUE equality under the law.
What might true equality look like? Not what we have now, obvs.

Because what we have now is gender co-ercively assigned by the state at age zero when most people are taking little notice of anything beyond their next shit, the state of the local dairy and....”oooo....shiny!”
It is then up to those who later realise that the state fucked up to go, cap in hand, to the state, and ask “please....pretty please, Mr anonymous, can I have my gender back?”
Note how this works. You did not choose that gender. The state assigned it. And you must now jump through all manner of hurdles to claim what was never their's to take.
Whereas equality? What might that look like? How about not assigning gender until someone is old enough to decide, in mature fashion, what gender they have?
We could wait until people reach the age of maturity – 18. Or we could trust individuals, as we do when it comes to contraception, and allow them to choose as soon as they are competent to do so, perhaps aged 12 or 13 (Gillick principle).
But I guess all the pseudo-feminists who argue now that a 13 year old cannot know their gender would remain consistent and insist on waiting til 18.
Such larks! The bureaucracy would fill an entire government department. Not forgetting the appeals procedure.

Because unlike now, where trans folks DON'T get to appeal, this would affect cis folks too, and they would just SCREAM if they didn't get appeal privileges.
What WOULD the Department for Gender Assignment make of some of the gender crit bunch, many of whom claim to be women? Because on recent experience a lot of them would be sent packing for not being feminine enough/female enough in their presentation.
What then? Would they automatically be assigned as default male? Or would they be consigned to some sort of grey area?

Perhaps the largest single category in the 2111 census would be the agendered.
(I jest. As any fule kno, by 2111 the world will have gone to hell in a handcart - other manually operated vehicles are availiable - and we will all be crispy burnt. So nothing, not even gender will matter any more).
Oh. And no more invalidating marriage because someone didn't mention they were trans in the first 730 days of that marriage (or 731 if a Leap Year is included).
Doncha just love that one! Day 731 (or 732!). “Darling, surprise!”

“What?”

“I'm trans....”

“You what?”

“And yesterday you could just have annulled the marriage no q's asked. But now....you're stuck with me.”

What a difference a day makes!
So, sure. This government will be looking at gender through a very unequal kaleidoscope.

But it does make you think - when you start to think - what real equal gender could look like.
