Criticising Israel without being antisemitic 101:
1. Tropes & imagery - if it would be at home in Nazi germany, don’t share it. Cartoons of hook-nosed Jews controlling the world, allegations of ‘lobbies’ controlling the world etc. are no better just because you’ve said ‘Israel’
2. Yelling at Jews about Israel when they haven’t mentioned Israel, or if they’ve mentioned Israel, say, in the context I am now. Accusing Jews of being more loyal to Israel, of being in the pay of the Israeli government / in on a conspiracy - all antisemitic.
3. No matter how disgusted you are with, say, American or Saudi government policies, would you call for the total destruction of those countries and the people who live there? No? So if you’re making that argument about Israel you might just be antisemitic.
4. Using ‘Zios’ or ‘Zionist’ as a pejorative is without fail a cover / code word for Jew. It’s not a free pass to say antisemitic stuff because you’ve put in a sneaky Israel disclaimer.
5. Defacing Jewish cultural & historical sites, particularly those related to tragedy / the Holocaust with pro-Palestinian messages is holding Jews collectively responsible for the actions of the Israeli government & is definitely antisemitic.
6. If you’re not sure, ask yourself if you’re criticising the actions of a government in the same way you would another country, or if you’ve gone the extra mile to abuse someone who doesn’t deserve it or used racial slurs to do so. It’s not difficult.
